Ancient Rituals

Ancient Rituals is rooted in the lifestyles of Mesolithic hunter-gatherers in the North. This project compares their distant pasts to modern life, discovering that our basic human needs and experiences are fundamentally the same, and even identifying certain traits that are still sought after by many.
By re-appropriating the artefacts and values in ancient material and immaterial culture, the objective is to create a link with the past. This semantic and symbolic relationship allows us to ask how our ancestors have come to shape our life as we know it today.
The resulting dining set is inspired by the activity of gathering around a fire. Instinctively, we associate it with safety, warmth and food. Archaeological findings around ancient hearths confirm just how much of human life was centred around fire. This importance is translated in the way we gather around our dinner tables. As our modern lives become more complex, we are losing sight of this importance.
A heated stone base with a large ceramic serving bowl keeps food warm for longer, allowing us to take time and enjoy it, as well as facilitating eating at different times. Its shape is inspired by ancient ‘cup marks’ carved into rocks for food preparation and making offerings.
The set includes plates and cups which also fit into the base to be warmed up. Their aesthetic takes advantage of the elemental simplicity of hunter-gather objects and their textural finishes evoke the materiality of stone, smoke, ash and other activities associated with fire.

Poprzez ponowne przywłaszczenie artefaktów i wartości życia mezolitycznych łowców-zbieraczy z Północy, celem projektu jest stworzenie połączenia z przeszłością. Ten semantyczny związek pozwala na pytanie w jaki sposób dawni ludzie ukształtowali życie, jakie znamy dzisiaj, a także które z ich cech są nadal poszukiwane przez wielu.

Ogrzewana kamienna podstawa z dużą ceramiczną miską utrzymuje ciepło jedzenia przez dłuższy czas, pozwalając nam poświęcić więcej czasu na jedzenie. Jej kształt jest inspirowany starożytnymi znakami wyrytymi w skałach w celu przygotowania jedzenia i składania ofiar.
W skład zestawu wchodzą talerze i kubki, które również mieszczą się w podstawce, aby można było je podgrzać. Ich estetyka wykorzystuje elementarną prostotę przedmiotów zbieranych przez myśliwych, a teksturowe wykończenia przywołują materialność kamienia, dymu, popiołu i innych czynności związanych z ogniem.
