As much as 83% of Belgium's landscape is strongly fragmented – can a series of cabinets designed for undervalued public spaces rekindle relationships with the urban ecology?
Fuelled by land conversion, degradation and high recreation pressure on urban greenspace, only 52% of recorded species in the Flanders region are considered safe or at low risk.
Starting with the topic of coexistence, our three-month residency with Designregio creates tools and opportunities for communities of people and other living things to meet in public. A series of cabinets are designed to facilitate spontaneous activities, highlighting local wildlife and forms of more-than-human agency in undervalued spaces.
Using existing and widely understood reference points such as the regional textile industry, the project's main objective is to harness existing ecological awareness. Sets of tools and objects surrounding the cabinets help translate critical knowledge about urban ecosystems into activities. Experimental and open-ended, they emphasise the importance of free and accessible types of public infrastructure which contribute to lowering participation thresholds.
Our residency in Kortrijk ends with a publication in the form of a series of posters.
