Can participatory design methods be applied in a bio-inclusive context as a collaboration between man and nature? The forest radio is an interrogation into the process of growth and decay, as well contested relationships between consumer objects and their obscured origins.
The prototype casting is a functional radio, whose outer texture is moulded to the shape of decaying wood. After being filled with pine resin to produce its glowing internals, it reproduces the sounds recorded from the forest where it started.
The radio’s story begins in the suburbs of Paris, where a wooden log lies in the forest. As time goes on, natural processes take over as the wood’s nutrients are consumed by the environment. Over the next years, it is shaped into its final form, which is interpreted by the craftsman.
It is clear there is an inverse correlation between capitalist ways of creating value and the transparency of finished products. In the current system, objects in our urban/domestic settings are no longer representative of their pasts, which have been erased. Forest Radio is an attempt to propose a different outlook. By reclaiming its own story and history through its materiality, it addresses the natural processes and ecologies we owe a debt to.
